Mugshot art
“Most Wanted”
This series of artworks, aptly named "Most Wanted," are derived from over 20 authentic police mugshots of renowned 20th-century figures juxtaposed against their encounters with the law. By utilizing this unlikely source material, the artist explores the paradoxes of fame, notoriety and the human experience.
Medium:
They were first produced by Louis Sidoli in 2009 as canvas silk-screen prints and have since been published as both fine art prints and aluminium editions.
Published editions:
They swiftly soared to commercial and critical success as a range of over 25 limited edition prints published by Washington Green Fine Art in 2010-11, with many thousands finding homes across the globe. They managed to captivate not only art collectors, but also went viral and found a much broader audience of cultural enthusiasts.
Inspiration :
The original inspiration for the “Most Wanted” series came from a series of early silkscreen portraits made by Andy Warhol: In 1964 he was commissioned to produce a large mural to decorate the facade of the New York State Pavillion at the 1964 New York World Fair. For the project, Warhol used the mugshot photographs of thirteen men wanted by the NYPD featured in a police brochure called ‘Thirteen Most Wanted’.
